If you have more manual camera then you will be able to manipulate many settings. The two settings that really want to know is the shutter and aperture.
Shutter is basically a small slot that opens when taking a picture. When open it lets light in. The amount of time the shutter is opened is the shutter settings you use. A shutter 1 / 30 is open to 1 / 30 second. A number of longer opening means that the picture will become brighter.
Aperture is the iris camera. This is a hole that allows light in. Bigger iris settings mean that you will let more light in. A larger aperture of f/2.8 will let a lot of light in. This makes the photo more have a shallow depth of field. Smaller settings like f/16 will let less light in and then you will probably need a larger aperture if in a darker environment. Small apertures mean you will get a wider depth of field.
